Trouble with 10+ FPS drop when panels are launched in X-Plane 12

#1 Post by CapitanBob2021 »

I am having an issue when I load both panels in X-Plane 12. Before launching panels I have over 30FPS. I have 5 screens total, 2 that are touchscreens that I currently use for Cessna 172SP G1000 cockpit and screens with knobster. When I launch the right hand panel, I lose about 5-7 FPS; if I launch the second one I lose 7-10 FPS which drops the FPS down to the teens.
I tried the secondary computer but couldn’t get it to work correctly. I was advised to use processor affinity and move Air Manager to a different set of cores. That didn’t help.

I am wondering if I can make a double wide panel to stretch across both screens and if that would help. I could merge the monitors in Nvidia to be a single monitor. Would I have to build a panel from scratch? Also can’t currently sim my current panels and can see any way to edit them in the edit tool. The panels are blank for settings. Any thoughts? I am at your mercy. Here is a link to YouTube video https://youtube.com/shorts/2-mCVtnnhDs? ... I_N1dhaI8Q

Unfortunately it is just the way it is in that your system is bottlenecked and hence the performance drop.
Have you looked at.
Have you monitor task manager performance etc ?
You are probably bottlenecked in both cpu and gpu.

Looking at the GPU times, it's a massive drop when opening the second panel. I would try to lower GPU load in XP first. Then check if the drop is panel-specific. The drops in AM that I experience are usually 5% fps or so, not much. Prints to console in the code cost a lot fps. I would try to check things in the AM settings tab and then graphics, but not sure if it makes any difference. What happens if you turn off the virtual cockpit by Ctrl+w?
XP11 has usually a better performance.
Are you using the premium panels from SI? You cannot edit the gauges, just place them.

Hi @CapitanBob2021, you didn't mentioned your specs ...

Are you on XP12.06r2 / 12.06r3 running on Windows ??? Where, with these last releases, Zink AND Vulkan have been forced disabled, so the whole Simulator is reverting to OpenGL !!! So, perfs are mostly pushed down, together with, it looks like, you are using 2 popup panels from the sim, which indeed are adding a lot of FPS consumption in this situation

[EDIT] Additionally and as Joe and Olli already mentioned, using 5 monitors with one being a wide curve monitor ... in such situation ... 🤔

I have a case where money is no real object. I run XP. I have 5 monitors but 3 on the main computer (3 x 32 1080p) and 2 on the other - occasionally 4...
As said I am lucky, money is not an issue.
I run a 9900K at 5.2 ghz on 8 cores and a 2080ti overclocked by 600 mhz.

it runs about 30 to 35 fps.

I could go out tomorrow and buy a 13900k and 4090ti but I know I would not gain anything worth writing home about.

XP is SHITE in performance and optimisation. No matter what bullshit Austin pedals it is still mainly a single core program.

Vulkan is utter garbage.

He should scrap support for anything other than direct X, but wont for a few nerds.

you are pissing against the wind in trying to make it perform. it is a bag of rusty spanners

(Yet :o I still - for some god forsaken reason still use it. )

It is far better than MSFS

In your opinion, is there anything better out there? I’ve only tried MSFS2020 and X-Plane 11 & 12.

That's indeed quite a lot of frame loss. You can try set the Air Manager rendering to OpenGL (Settings tab), just to see if that makes any difference, probably not.

You could run the panels on a second computer with 4.2 (beta) through streaming. But then your X-Plane computer has to encode the G1000's to H264, so the question is if that helps or if you end up at the same spot. But worth a shot I think.

Thanks Ralph and others. I am running the freshest X-Plane 12 update and AM 4.2beta, but to be fair, this has been happening for awhile now. As for system specs.
CPU: AMD 7850X3D
RAM: 32GB DDR5
SSD: Crucial 2TB 13k read/write
GPU: Titanium NVIDIA 4090
PS: Gold 1000Watts
Main Display: Samsung Odyssey 49”
Side displays: 2) 55” Samsung Q8 QLED displays
Cockpit: Flight Velocity Pro Series Model 4- FVPro4 13.3 Touchscreen and Dual Encoder support
Honeycomb Alpha, Bravo & Logitech rudder pedals

Hello Bob,
No, there is nothing better out there 'yet' imho.
MSFS is looking to be a contender in another 1 to 2 years.

Austin (X-Plane) is a dreamer. He stated he wanted to see the program using all cores available (allowing for add-ons etc) and full GPU usage.
Well, it never did and still does not,

Have you tried turning all your graphic options down to minimum and seeing what the frame rate is ? - same with experimenting with processor usage and settings that affect it.
You can use ctrl shift esc and look at the performance to see there your bottleneck is. and where you NEED to turn settings down.
I would not recommend ANY display running higher than 1080p if there are multiple units in use at the same time - obviously with a widescreen monitor you are a bit stuck ;)
See how many of your cores are being used in performance manager (form the ctl shit esp as mention)
For the CPU, make sure the graph is showing all cores - you can right click on the processor graph to select the option for options.

Hope that helps ?
It is fairly easy to find your bottlenecks this way.

As already mentioned with XP12.06r2 and up, Laminar Research has disabled Vulkan and Zink without the ability to activate
So XP12.06r2 and up can only run with OpenGL for the moment on Windows, until Vulkan + Zink, or whatever new future solution and component, will be re activated and available
Take a stop please and sit down, let think what can be such rig, whatever high-end it could be, with only running on OpenGL ... 🤔 Well ... !!!
