Thank you, sir...

Still need to decide which approach I want to take and how far down the rabbit hole I want to go.

I am still trying to understand the digit pinouts. I found an error with the digit connections in my first schematic.

Tell me if this is the correct approach....
Am I correct in that Dig0 thru Dig5 on the 7219 would be used for the 6 digits on the two displays?
And counting from the left on the displays will be Dig1 thru Dig6. (I renamed the 3 digits on the right display schematic symbol to 4, 5 and 6.

Digit 6 will not be used so I only need Dig0 thru Dig4 from the max7219 IC.... correct?

Since the use of the two pre-made modules required two of them to be daisy chained, is it correct that two max7219 with a separate circuit for each radio (COM and NAV) and be needed and that they will have to use (6) arduino pins for two separate sets of Din, CLK, and LOAD?
Or can the two DIY max7219 circuits be daisy chained like the two display modules are and thus only require the (3) arduino pins?

In other words, will Dout be used or not?

Hi,

I am going to be out of this. The scope parameters keep on changing at a whim.

If you want a simple build PCB, I can provide the files.

Keith,

The scope has always been to build a COM/NAV radio.
To that end, I am exploring different options for the educational aspect. Can't learn if you dont try, fail and learn from mistakes.

There are a number of options for building a PCB from the simple to the complex.
I want to explore a few of them....and any advice on how to make things clean and neat are always welcomed.

I am not a PCB designer but still trying to learn some basics that could lead to other projects over the years.

This is a bit of this where we have to iterate using one MAX7219 for each up to 8 digits

Hi

Yes
If we are doing a PCB rebuild then all is moot.
Just use the in store instruments and all is good to go.
You will need to impost this in EasyEDA
SCH_MAX 6 digit_2023-01-02.json

Try this and place/change components.
And as Joe says add parameters to adjust display intensity which AM does not cater for. @Corjan Brightness for displays on the radar....

I have no need to adjust brightness levels.

Yes that might be your preference.

For others it might be different. Changing the brightness to simulate a IRL experience might be a priority.
I would like to change MY display brightness using my "PANEL BRIGHT" knob.

Hi Keith,
AM gives you the full brightness options - have you missed this ? - or are you referring to something else, apologies If I missed something.

Brightness isnt an issue that I can see.
Gilles schematic looks good but the logical (left to right) digit order is reversed in my mind - but we can move onto that after the brightness issue
