character display with max7219

AM 4.2.11 used to flash a new nano and mega2560. my 5 digit max7219 display only shows the first 2 digits being the last 2 characters of the string. An older flashed nano and mega2560 works fine showing all 5 digits.

I found the problem. You have to provide 8 characters to get a 5 digit display with max7219 working

Actually 9.
to test if I am wrong send a string 8888888.8 then send 8 white spaces you will end up with an 8 as the last segment.If you send 9 white spaces then you will get a blank display
