Use of Knobster with RealSim Gear G500 in X-Plane

#1 Post by ChipDeMoss »

Can the Knobster be used to control the RealSim Gear G500 that is a standalone gauge that can be downloaded (for a price) into X-Plane 11/12. RealSim Gear believes it can be done but I just want to make sure before buying it. Here is their reply to my question as to whether the Knobster could be used:

Hello Chip,
You should be able to control the G500 software with a Knobster as they do have a set of datarefs, which I have listed below:
BTN_HDG=rsg/g500/cmd/pfd/ctl_hdg
BTN_CRS=rsg/g500/cmd/pfd/ctl_crs
BTN_ALT=rsg/g500/cmd/pfd/ctl_alt
BTN_VS=rsg/g500/cmd/pfd/ctl_vs
BTN_BARO=rsg/g500/cmd/pfd/ctl_baro
BTN_LEFT_PRESS=rsg/g500/cmd/pfd/knob_push
ENC_LEFT_INNER_CCW=rsg/g500/cmd/pfd/knob_left
ENC_LEFT_OUTER_CCW=rsg/g500/cmd/pfd/knob_left
ENC_LEFT_INNER_CW=rsg/g500/cmd/pfd/knob_right
ENC_LEFT_OUTER_CW=rsg/g500/cmd/pfd/knob_right
BTN_SOFT_1=rsg/g500/cmd/pfd/sfk_1
BTN_SOFT_2=rsg/g500/cmd/pfd/sfk_2
BTN_SOFT_3=rsg/g500/cmd/pfd/sfk_3
BTN_SOFT_4=rsg/g500/cmd/pfd/sfk_4
BTN_SOFT_5=rsg/g500/cmd/pfd/sfk_5
BTN_SOFT_6=rsg/g500/cmd/mfd/sfk_1
BTN_SOFT_7=rsg/g500/cmd/mfd/sfk_2
BTN_SOFT_8=rsg/g500/cmd/mfd/sfk_3
BTN_SOFT_9=rsg/g500/cmd/mfd/sfk_4
BTN_SOFT_10=rsg/g500/cmd/mfd/sfk_5
BTN_RNG_UP=rsg/g500/cmd/mfd/range_up
BTN_RNG_DN=rsg/g500/cmd/mfd/range_dn
BTN_MENU=rsg/g500/cmd/mfd/menu
BTN_CLR=rsg/g500/cmd/mfd/clr
BTN_ENT=rsg/g500/cmd/mfd/ent
ENC_RIGHT_OUTER_CCW=rsg/g500/cmd/mfd/knob_out_left
ENC_RIGHT_INNER_CCW=rsg/g500/cmd/mfd/knob_in_left
ENC_RIGHT_OUTER_CW=rsg/g500/cmd/mfd/knob_out_right
ENC_RIGHT_INNER_CW=rsg/g500/cmd/mfd/knob_in_right
BTN_RIGHT_PRESS=rsg/g500/cmd/mfd/knob_push
Those are the same commands sent by our G500 hardware.
Thanks,
Nick

My only question would be how to let the Knobster know what knob I want to control since the instrument is not in AirManager. Any insight would be helpful. I'm asking this because the airplane I am using to train to get my instrument rating has a G500 in it and that will be the same plane in which I take my check ride.

Thanks,

You would have to create a bezel for it if you're using it with Air Manager. Or implement new modes if you use KnobXP.
