Wishlist for announced code editor update in 4.2

#1 Post by Tetrachromat »

@Corjan
Just received your April 2022 newsletter. And read
We will soon start working on version 4.2, with things like an updated code editor and improvements to the UI.
Will that 'updated code editor' allow the editing of text files (like .txt .json .csv) from the 'resources' folder? Would be quite helpful.

I would add a new wish: improve the panel editor.
Currently there are 2 ways to edit panels. One allows to edit scripts but not the instruments order. The other has a nice drag and drop but no way to edit scripts.

Hi Yves

I started this topic as a wishlist for the code editor.

Could you please start another topic for your wish as it is not related to code editing.

Thanks
Paul

I wish I could have a” search and replace” feature that I lack in the current code editor.
And I think that the possibility of having the code editor in a separate window from AM would help a lot when working on an instrument, in order to have as much real estate as possible for the editor, alongside with the gauge itself and the sim.
Or at least having the top and lateral pane not sticky (ie only appear when the mouse hovers on the left and top borders).
I am always annoyed to have the create/edit AM panel clogged with the instrument panel list on the left and the tab menu on top when developing. Maybe a simple icon to show/hide these panels would do the trick?

Talking about the gauge, I have noticed that the gauge windows when run from the create/edit tab cannot stay on top of the AM windows, which means one cannot work with AM expanded in full screen, as the running test gauge stays on the background and is hidden. Not to mention the Viewer window that has the same problem (cannot stay on top of AM main window)

Not everybody has a very large screen or dual monitors. 8-)

I second that "search and replace" functionality. And add the searching optionally using 'regex' syntax.

And yes the two windows "stay on top" would be nice to have.

I 'm bumping this thread because I have not got an answer from @Corjan or @Ralph if this is going to make it into the new editor.

Thanks

No plans for now, at least not for 4.2. The editor is still a bit buggy, I would rather see that fixed first :)

Hi @Ralph, Does the latest 4.2 BETA still contain the buggy editor or did you replace it? Would like to start testing BETA.

Yes it does. It's a little better, but not great. There will be a different editor in probably 4.3.

OK @Ralph, that means you have more time to plan for a new editor ;) . Any chance that this wishlist is reconsidered for 4.3?

A compilation of feature requests I have seen throughout the forums:

Requests for editor features
- allow for editing of text files (.txt .json .csv) from the 'resources' folder
- search and replace
- search and replace options like regex / case-sensitivity
- support for user snippets
- optional second editor pane (side by side)

Related to creating/editing but not direct editor features
- running gauge window always on top
- detachable editor, subscriptions and console panes (reatachable/stackable along any side of the main pane)
- list pane as 'tree view' with
. top categories Instrument/Panel/Hardware/FI-Gauge instead of drop down list
. sub trees for each category with grouping by 'aircraft' from info.xml
- a "info" pane instead of "Info" dialog for subtrees
- folding and unfolding of the list pane

Ralph, please forward to Corjan for review. And maybe a statement from you guys sometimes in the future what might be in 4.3.

Thank you
