Great work, and nice to see that Chuck was an inspiration to you.
I think that the Pico is a good choice, although COM ports are fairly stable, native USB is probably more reliable over time.

Here's my version of using a real KT76A. The header connections will allow the front board of the KT-76 to solder in. The holes are aligned properly. The interface is a Raspberry Pico... I've prototyped it already. The header at the top is so the extra pins only the Pi can be used. The two pin one is to add the lighting with 12V in the future, maybe. I've taken the +14V on the front panel to ground, which makes the code easier by just sensing the power using the switched +14V.
I've also included the schematic for the front panel trimmed out of the maintenance manual. All the lines are labelled but I need to make them bigger; I have a marked up print out on my desk.
