You could also use the displays without an interface chip. The API supports both. Just take your pick.

The MAX7219 is awesome, I use them as well. The TM1637 modules are VERY inexpensive, and are available in pre-built modules with up to 6 digits, which is ideal for radios, etc. And they are available in many colors. I've found them perfect for radios, transponders, etc. They only need 2 signal leads, and the actual digit size is great.

It is an interesting chip.

There is one downside though, and that it that it can both drive a display and read buttons.
I can do that display part, but the input's won't be functioning.

I'll add it to the TODO list. No guarantee though on when it might come, we are quite busy at the moment.
