Well after much annoyance from beta 45 onwards with Java SE crashing seconds after start, I updated.to beta 55 today and finally its working. I have not tried every beta as some came quickly on the back of another but this works. I have made a few machine setting changes including something I found related to Java SE in windows firewall settings.

I will probably try some of those earlier versions which I know had trouble just to see if it was my machine settings. I'll post back if I find anything that I think may be useful for others.

Corjan did an important fix in beta 55, could have very well been that issue.

Yep after going back to beta 50 the Java bug came back so it wasn't anything I changed on this machine that fixed it.

I hope you understand what it was that caused the issue. I didn't try 51 to 54 but somewhere between 44 and 55 it was broken and then fixed.

I'd be happy to try 54 if I could get it. But if you are pretty certain you understand the issue and solution in 55 I won't bother.

Well done that was a big fix for me.

Yes it's a problem with the com ports, which happens with some computers.
