Well it’s up to you Ralph, but I definitely think a two step registration (user+admin) would relieve you to do the cleaning afterwards, considering the relatively low number of users overall.

They would still be able to post things if they just wait for the confirmation. I don't want to go through the hassle of approving everyone, and people complaining that it is taking too long and such.

Yes I understand perfectly, hence my proposal to help you as a backup admin or moderator. Overall two or three moderators of some sort would help, and ensure a relatively low latency in the registration process.

Maybe a more complex Captcha would have to be first implemented to deter basic spammer, even human?

But again, it’s up to you, no big deal after all, more of a nuisance...Won’t discuss it further, don’t you worry!

I'll see if this might be an option, when I have some spare time :)

Perfect, the Q&A Captcha seems to be effective, provided the questions are changed from time to time.

Add this Mod as well, and I think you’re good to go!
It sends automatically blocked emails to blacklist spam databases, and checks registration emails against these.

And Stop Forum Spam mod

An effective way seems also to systematically add new users to a new members group until they reach 10 posts or so and to prevent this group to post URLs. Once they’ve reached the 10 posts limit, they are automatically removed from this group.

I posted here because those spam topics are very likely to be deleted.

It seems this is getting worse lately. I know most of us are getting fed up with this now.

I for one would be glad if some extra up front security were added to verify a legit user before allowing posting to the forum.

Hi,

In fact, Ralph tried to update the forums this week, but somehow the upgrade failed. We will try again next week.
The latest version of phpBB has a new capcha, which hopefully helps is filtering out the bots (if they really are that).

Normally it is just one or two members a week or so, but lately things are getting out of hand.

Thanks for the update Corjan. If it is bots the captcha should do the trick. If it’s not you may have to consider another method. I guess we will see after Ralph gets the update to work.
