Network setup

#1 Post by frumpy »

Hi there,

I've looked for this on the net, but it turned out to rather raise questions, than answering them.

I've got two computers:
PC1 with Air Player, all flightsims, no internet
PC2 with AM and internet

Both PC1 and PC2 are with a LAN cable on the router. However, I want to keep track of
updates that programs on PC1 do, I don't want to risk breaking anything or even get malware.
Simple solution was to remove the LAN cable. But now I cannot use Air Player any more.
I'd like to keep PC1 on the router, but block it from accessing the WWW. PC2 can access
the net. So I guess thats a local network. But how is this done (the easy way)?

Thanks,

Olli

Not that easy I'm afraid. What's the WWW... that can be browsing (port 8080), Windows system updates (which can't be turned off in Windows 10), and many applications probably use different ports. Maybe you can do something with router settings, blocking a certain MAC address from going online.

I'm no network export, so maybe someone else has a better idea.

You could create two subnetworks.

You will need to give PC2 two network cards. One connected to the router, and the other one connected directly to PC1 with a cross cable.

The last part would be to assign static IP addresses to both PC1 and PC2 (non-internet network card)

It is a bit of a hassle to get going, but I think this will solve your problem.
