scratched glass

#1 Post by tomlithgow »

Several of the stock instruments have a "glass" graphics layer made to copy a worn and scratched instrument glass.
I have pinched a couple to use on the instruments I've made so far, but I'd like to make my own.

How is it done and can I use Serif's Photoplus to do it?

Glass is a transparent material so you don't see it.
What makes the illusion of glass is the sharp reflection of light in the glass. And maybe a slight coloration of the glass, maybe a tiny bit of blue.
Scratching the glass causes a sharp light reflection flanked by an intense narrow shadow edge.
Worn glass has a more dull white finish

How to make this effect

Get images of scratched glass (with a solid background)
Use parts and bits to create the effect what you like best
Set the background to transparent.
Overlay the image and you are done.

Use your favorite drawing program to do this.
Photoshop (payware)
Gimp (freeware) almost just as good and my favorite.

There are plenty of tutorials on the subject on YouTube
