Creae GTN750/650 questions with air manager

#1 Post by Justinnp »

Hi,

I would like to create a GTN650/750 and I am thinking of buying it from realityxp.

After that print the frame of the GTN, put a touchscreen display inside that frame and install real knobs and push buttons. Also remove the outer bezels of the real frame so I only got the gps and comm data on the touchscreen without knobs.

I think that the real knobs and push buttons will do the same on the gtn like this?
Did someone create it before or can someone confirm that it will work like this?
Or is it impossible to remove the outer bezel and use real knobs and buttons for the gtn?

Printing this one:

Like this but then with air manager and gtn bought from realityxp:

I think what you are trying to achieve should be well within the scope of Air Manager although I have not built a project of that type yet.

It is really remarkably straightforward to connect buttons, knobs (rotary encoders), switches etc. into Air Manager using a low cost Arduino interface board.
I have done this for some switches and mapped them to several on the instrument panel.

The display would be independent of Air Manager and would be within the scope of X-Plane, so make sure you have a spare HMDI display port to connect it through.

After using the RealityXP I am totally sold on their method. It really does operate exactly like the real box in the aircraft, including driving the autopilot, HSI etc.
Great for learning its inner secrets and practising procedures. Air Manager and Knobster complement it well - I have this and all other panel instruments incorporated onto a single large touchscreen.
It's very flexible but does take time to perfect.

Hi, Looking on this topic with interest as It's been awhile since I've had time.
Tomorrow I'll post a photo of what I did to make a GTN750, it is amazingly simple and worked. I wanted to make it a replica, but in the end I just needed it functional asap for flight training I was doing and I'll improve the design later.

Have you seen this https://grabcad.com/library/garmin-gtn- ... vigation-1
I don't have the 3d skills to fix this and remove the buttons and dual rotaries, If you have these skills I'd like to use this 3d print :D

SO what I did,
1) Get a screen from ebay etc... I don't think you can get the exact size of a gtn750 but this is ok for mehttps://www.ebay.com.au/itm/7-Inch-Capa ... 0011.m1850

2) Get the home, direct to, buttons from your local shop they should be cheep just push buttons,

3) Volume Squelch etc.. is just a... https://www.jaycar.com.au/rotary-encode ... n/p/SR1230

4) Find a dual encoder with push button, this is your hardest challenge, I used propwash as I had spares from another project.

5) Arduino Board from ebay etc...

6) Enclosure

Code: Select all

Once you get all the parts it will not take long to build.

Just to let you know (I hope I don't upset the creators here of AM), You can use simvim to program this very easily, Or use AM if you prefer, I used Simvim because of my setup, and didn't want to use AM as I use AM from my laptop from outside the sim room :D :D
