If you're testing these things with an add-on aircraft and it doesn't work, then it is always good to verify with an aircraft like the default Cessna 172 or Baron 58.
Like Sling said, often add-on aircraft have their own datarefs and/or commands.

You can first give it a try with the firewall turned off. And maybe trying to run X-Plane as administrator, but I don't know if that should make a difference.

What does the content say?

People who have no idea, like me, won't understand why the screen stays black. On the iPad a panel script doesn't work, so there it always shows. So maybe it has to be turned into a setting?

Is it possible to make it work with a different dataref maybe? Because if you don't have that dataref, the screen will remain black.

You would probably need to use their custom events.
